Generally speaking, dermal fillers are used either for contouring the face and enhancing the lips or for correcting creases, folds, and wrinkles that appear as a result of aging and sun damage. Areas typically treated by dermal Fillers include:
Advanced injectable dermal fillers described on this page contain no animal proteins, as a result, the risk of an allergic reaction is limited. It is recommended that dermal fillers are not administered to patients under 18 years. Patients that are not suitable candidates for injectable dermal fillers include those that have bleeding disorders, are pregnant or breastfeeding, are taking blood thinning medications, or are allergic to Lidocaine, the numbing agent used during the injections.
Many women and men in Los Angeles and elsewhere are choosing injectable fillers because they are quick, effective, and recovery time is very short.
At Nu Vela, Dr. R. Dishakjian, the cosmetic surgeon at the center, will perform the injections using a very fine needle, numbing cream, ice packs, and sometimes dental nerve blocks to minimize any discomfort and assure the comfort of his patients. The entire treatment is usually complete in less than 30 minutes.
You may experience some minor bruising and swelling immediately after your treatment. These will usually disappear within a few days, but sometimes may last up to a week. You can immediately resume your normal daily activities, except that you should avoid exposure to heat and sun for a day or two. Swelling may be more likely in young patients, and bruising may be more likely in patients over 35 years.
You should preferably wear sunscreen in the weeks leading up to your procedure to prevent skin damage and should stop using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, high doses of vitamin E supplements, or St John’s worth, as they may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site.
Although each dermal filler has its unique attributes, in general, most dermal fillers plump and lift the skin gently either by replacing the lost collagen or stimulating the body to produce its own natural collagen; some help more than others. With the exception of a few, the plumping effect of most dermal fillers is almost instantaneous and last from several months to a year or two before touch up treatments are necessary to extend results.
Our medical spa offers a variety of injectable dermal fillers that can improve your facial appearance and enhance your self-image. At Nu Vela, these treatments are administered by Dr. Raffi Dishakjian. During a consultation, Dr. Dishakjian will discuss what you would like to change and help you choose the filler that is best suited to help you achieve your goals. Advanced dermal fillers provided by our medical spa include Restylane®, Perlane®, Radiesse®, Juvederm®, and Sculptra®.
Restylane® and Restylane® Silk
Approved by the FDA in late 2003, Restylane® is an effective, safe, non-surgical facial treatment designed to restore fullness to your skin and hide the effects of aging.
Restylane® filler injections are composed of a clear hyaluronic acid-based gel. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that hydrates and adds volume to our skin.
Restylane® is primarily used as a filler to improve moderate to severe folds and wrinkles on the face, especially nasolabial folds, the lines that stretch from the nose to the sides of the mouth, the corners of the mouth, marionette lines (the area that extends downward from the corners of the mouth to the jawline), lipstick lines (the area just below the nose and above the upper lip), lips, and under eye hollows. In addition to its plumping effect, Restylane® also adds moisture and lubrication to the skin, making it feel younger and more comfortable. You should see initial results almost immediately, and full results will generally appear within two weeks and last for 6 to 9 months. Touch-up and follow-up treatments will make the effects of Restylane® last longer
Restylane® Silk on the other hand, is the only FDA-approved product on the market designed for subtly smoothing out lip lines and adding a healthy, fuller appearance. When injected into the lips, results with Restylane® Silk are more natural-looking than other injectable fillers on the market and typically last six months to one year. Follow-up treatments are recommended.
Patients should not be administered more than 6.0 mL of Restylane® per treatment for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, and no more than 3 mL of Restylane® Silk for lip corrections. If a volume of more than these limits is needed to achieve optimal correction, a follow-up treatment session is recommended.
This dermal filler is manufactured by Medicis Aesthetics. This is the same company that makes Restylane®. Both Resylane® and Perlane® are hyaluronic acid-based soft tissue fillers. Perlane® is slightly thicker and more viscous than Restylane®, and may be a better bet for filling deeper lines. Plumping effects of Perlane® generally last six months, depending on the individual. Touch-up and follow-up treatments will make the improvements of Perlane® last longer.
Radiesse® is made of unique calcium-based microspheres that are suspended in a water-based gel. It is a next generation dermal filler that stimulates the body to produce new collagen, add volume to the facial structure and restore a natural, youthful look that may last for a year or more. With Radiesse, you get safe, FDA-approved, clinically tested reliability, while saving your time and money.
Numerous medical studies have shown that Radiesse® is a safe and effective treatment for filling and correcting smile lines, nasolabial folds, under eye hollows, and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. It can also be used to build cheekbones, hide hand veins, augment jaw lines and add contours to other areas of the face, giving you soft, natural-looking results.
RADIESSE FOR NASOLABIAL FOLDS AND UNDER EYE HOLLOWS
Juvederm® consists of cross-linked hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in your skin, which helps add volume and hydration. It comes in the form of smooth consistency gel; whereas other hyaluronic acid dermal fillers currently on the market are made of granular consistency gels. Consequently, Juvederm® flows more easily into the skin than most other fillers and provides a smooth, natural look and feel. JUVÉDERM® is the first FDA approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that lasts up to a year and has demonstrated its safety and effectiveness in persons of color.
JUVÉDERM® comes in two formulations—JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC and JUVÉDERM®Ultra Plus XC. JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC provides versatility in correcting superficial facial wrinkles and folds, while JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC is a more robust formulation for adding volume to deeper folds and wrinkles, such as your “smile lines” or nasolabial folds—the creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth.
FILLER INJECTION FOR UNDER EYE HOLLOW AND CHEEK AUGMENTATION
Unlike most other facial fillers, Sculptra Aesthetic is a collagen stimulator; that is, it reshapes the face with the patient’s own collagen. Sculptra® Aesthetic works by filling a wrinkle with a small amount of PLLA beads, which gradually break down as the body produces its own collagen at the site of injection. No serious adverse events are reported with the dermal filler, except for occasional small bumps and lumps, which resolve on their own.
RESTORING FACIAL VOLUME AND FILLING FOLDS WITH SCULPTRA AESTHETIC
Sculptra® Aesthetic is indicated for the correction of shallow to deep nasolabial folds (smile lines) contour sunken cheeks and plump facial wrinkles; hallmark signs of facial aging. On average, three treatment sessions are needed over a period of a few months to produce gradual, subtle results that can last up to two years after the last treatment session. Patients who have undergone Sculptra® Aesthetic injections are described as not only looking younger, but also looking like themselves.

Fat Grafting or autologous fat transplantation or micro-lipoinjection plumps up facial features using the patient’s own fat. Fat transfer to the face is a safe, natural, non-allergenic procedure designed to re-contour your face or other areas of the body, or provide definition to your cheeks and chin. It can also be used to correct facial deformities. Results have been proven to last about three years.
Fat transfer is performed in our facility using local anesthesia on both areas affected by the procedure – from where the fat is taken, and the treatment site where the fat is re-injected. Using a small needle attached to a syringe, fat is removed from a donor site where your fat is most tightly packed, such as your abdomen or your buttocks and then injected into the area that needs filling.
