Dynamic wrinkles develop because each time we smile, laugh, or frown, our skin creases or folds in the same way. When we are young, our skin springs back to its original position when we finish making the facial expression and the skin resumes its original texture. As we get older, the dynamic wrinkles remain on the skin even in the absence of any expression, because our skin “remembers” these creases and wrinkles and static wrinkles start to form. Botox® and Dysport are the treatment of choice for wrinkles caused by facial expressions. These include:

A combination therapy for wrinkle removal involving profractional laser peel, or injectable dermal fillers, such as Sculptra, Radiesse, or Juvederm may be indicated when the wrinkles have become pronounced and static, sometimes accompanied by folds and creases. The choice depends on the location and severity of the wrinkles.
Unlike dynamic wrinkles, static, are visible at all times, even in the absence of any facial expression. They may be fine or pronounced. Static wrinkles develop as a result of aging combined with sun damage and are associated with either denaturing of natural skin substances found in the dermis, such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, or due to a decrease in their amount. As the dermis becomes less resilient and stiffer, the skin is less able to spring back to its initial position after a facial expression, and as a result, static wrinkles and folds form.
