A gummy smile is so-called for the visibility of the gums when a person smiles. People with a gummy smile often feel self-conscious of their gums showing when they smile. One reasons a gummy smile occurs is when there is a hyperactive muscle that pulls the lip up too far when smiling, or because the upper lip is very thin.
