A gummy smile is so called because of the visibility of the gums when a person smiles. People with a gummy smile often feel self-conscious of their gums showing when they smile. One reason a gummy smile occurs is when there is a hyperactive muscle that pulls the lip up too far when smiling, or because the upper lip is very thin. To correct a gummy smile, Botox or similar injections like Dysport or Xeomin may be used to create a smile that hides the gums.
